Komen Affiliate changes name to reflect expanded service area
Non-profit will be known as Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®

Milwaukee – April 19, 2010 – Susan G. Komen’s Milwaukee Affiliate will now be known as the Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure® to better reflect the actual geographic breadth of communities served.

The Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate is part of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, the world’s largest and most progressive grassroots network fighting to end breast cancer forever. Since 1999, the Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate has worked in the eight-county area to keep the subject of breast cancer high in the public consciousness and provide resources for under-served women. Komen has raised nearly $5 million locally toward national research and local education, screening, and treatment.

The people of Southeast Wisconsin raised nearly $1 million in 2009. Twenty-five percent of funds raised goes to breast cancer research at the national level while 75% of funds raised stays local going to grants meeting the needs of underserved women with breast cancer education, screening and access to treatment in Milwaukee, Waukesha, Ozaukee, Racine, Kenosha, Walworth, Washington, and Jefferson Counties.

“Our Affiliate has had a longstanding commitment to serve women in the eight-county area of Southeast Wisconsin,” says Sally Sheperdson, executive director of the Komen Southeast Wisconsin Affiliate. “We think our new name more accurately reflects who we are and where we provide support and other services.”

As part of the brand change, visitors to the current website, www.komenmilwaukee.org will be redirected to www.komensoutheastwi.org.  The Affiliate office will remain in its current location in Milwaukee County.

About Susan G. Komen for the Cure®
In 1980, Nancy C. Brinker watched helplessly as her sister, Susan G. Komen died after a three-year battle with breast cancer. Before Susan died, Nancy made a promise that would change the world: to end breast cancer forever. In 1982, that promise launched Susan G. Komen for the Cure®, now the global leader of the breast cancer movement. The organization has invested hundreds of millions of dollars each year for research, education, screening, treatment, and encouraging governments everywhere to make cancer a top priority.
